What is Volunteering?

¡á Traditional service spirit of Korean
&nbsp;
1. Ideology of Hongik-Ingan(È«ÀÍÀΰ£)
&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp; Hongik-Ingan as our nation's founding principle has been our spiritual backbone ever since the foundation of our nation. Hongik-ingan literally means "to be widely beneficial for human" based on Altruism, Love, Equality and Peace.
&nbsp;

▪ Courtesy. Good moral manners to others.
▪ Ç°¾ÑÀÌ(Pumashi) / Spirit of mutual help.
▪ ÀÌ¿ô»çÃÌ(Neighbour Cousin) love your neighbour as your cousin.
▪ ½Ê½ÃÀϹÝ(Ten spoons of rice makes one bowl of rice)/ Sharing

2. Á¤(Jeong) as a base of human relationship
- Jeong(Á¤) has ever been perceived as supreme value and the strongest agent of human relationship in Korea.
&nbsp;
What is ¡®Á¤¡¯ and where does it come from?
&nbsp;
1) What is Á¤(Jeong)?
&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp; Emotional attachment to someone, objects and place.
¡®Á¤¡¯ is the strongest agent of bonding between men, and men and objects. 'Á¤' is very unique Korean sentiment.
&nbsp;

▪ Adherence ▪ Caring ▪ Generosity ▪ long lasting
▪ Not money-minded ▪ Reciprocal(mutual benefits)
▪ Does not disappear easily.

2) How is it developed?
&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp; -Á¤ grows very slowly through continued, close relationship and
mutual experiences. Ex: ¡®Á¤µç »ç¶÷¡¯ ¡®Á¤µç °íÇ⡯ ¡®Á¤µç ¶¥¡¯ ¡®Á¤µç Çб³¡¯

1. Colonization by Japanese(1910 - 1945)
- Liberated at the end of the World War II.
&nbsp;
2. Korean War(1950 - 1953)
- lasted for full 3 years/ Everything destroyed.
&nbsp;
3. Destitute and hardship continued till the end of 1960.

¡á Era of Odeal for Koreans

Even under such desperate circumstances, strong brotherhood was tightly knitted among neighbours, sharing whatever available, supported by Á¤(Jeong). We call this Neighbour Cousin (ÀÌ¿ô »çÃÌ). Love neighbour as your cousin.

1. What we desperately need right now is; revival of 'Á¤' for a caring society.

2. How can we generate it then? --thru "ÀÚ¿øºÀ»ç/Volunteering.

¡á Current situation of volunteering in Korea
&nbsp;
1. What is Volunteerism?
▪ voluntary participation (free will)
▪ no money involved
▪ do something good for others and for public interest without
expecting anything return.
&nbsp;
1) For students
▪ 'Service learning' for middle school students(mandatory)
▪ High school and College students encouraged.
&nbsp;
2) For employees and Companies
▪ Philanthropy activities by company and its employees.
3) Community Volunteer Centers and non-profit organizations.
☀ Example: Power of volunteers
More than 1.3 million volunteers participated during the period of
&nbsp;
3 months throughout the country to save the oil spilt in the Sea of Taean in December 2007.

¡á 'ºÀ»ç'(Service) and 'ÀÚ¿øºÀ»ç'(Volunteer)

&nbsp; Therefore, helping and sharing is moral duty as a citizen.
